While I was in high school, my seminary class took a special trip to AZ to visit the Mesa temple and just have fun. We stayed in members' homes in small groups. My best friend and I stayed with an older lady (she was probably only like 50 or so, but at the time that seemed OLDER) who had a birthday while we were there. Her sons came over with their families for her birthday. One son gave her a three pack of flashlights. The other son gave her a 10 lb block of cheese.
Moral of the story: Cheese is apparently a perfectly legitimate birthday gift.
